Prospect Hill Dock - Haven (Odyssey)

Post  Jason Andersen on Fri Aug 05, 2011 9:55 pm

The "dock" of Prospect Hill was little more than a large landing area with an overgrown long runway stretching away from town for use by non-hovering craft. It was obvious the strip hadn't been used in a long while. The landing pad was paved, but had cracks in it, and the paint was faded and burned away in places.

A smaller area served as the gate, big enough for two large freighters or a handful of smaller vessels to park and offload without fouling the landing pad itself. Next to the gate area were three buildings: a small waiting area for passengers that was little more than a shack with a bench in it; a similar sized shack that served as the dockmaster's office; and a large warehouse for storage of goods, parts, tools and emergency equipment. Near the warehouse were three tanks - one labeled with the symbol for "Water", one "Oxygen", and one "Fuel".

The dock was nearly empty, save for a small space-capable shuttle.

A cart pulled by a draft horse was just pulling up near the shuttle. An adolescent boy was leading the horse, and a preadolescent girl who was obviously the boy's sister was walking beside him. Stopping the horse, the boy approached the shuttle.

"Oi, we got your goods!" he called towards it. He waited a moment, but the shuttle didn't open.

"Maybe she's not here yet," the preadolescent girl said to him.

The boy pondered that for a moment.

It took Shadai a few minutes to get to the docks. Once there, she spotted the draft horse and wagon. Slowing, she called out to the duo of kids, "Sorry I'm late!" She then jogged the rest of the way toward her shuttle. "I brought a couple of people to help with the loading. They were real nice to offer."

She knew the teens wouldn't recognize X and Naraea as their own, and would therefore assume they were the strangers everyone was probably scared of. That she wasn't could be a given - so she played a little dumb about it.

"It'll make things go faster so you can get back to your family," Shadai explained as she keyed in the code to open the bay door. "With the Alliance coming, you should be with them and not mucking around out here."

As if punctuate her words, a ship flew by slowly overhead in a weaving pattern, as if searching for something.

The boy and girl didn't seem to be bothered by the strangers. The boy had thought they were friends of the woman, but when she said she found them he was surprised they weren't already acquainted. Two sets of strangers in town at the same time was definitely unusual.

Both looked up to the sky as the gunship flew overhead. They hadn't been told the Alliance was on its way, and now they looked completely frightened. The boy, however, immediately assumed the ship was searching for these folk, and he knew the safest place for his sister was away from them. He also knew they still had a job to do, or else they'd be in a heap of trouble.

"Come on!" he cried to his sister, grabbing the reins of the horse and pulling it near the cargo bay to more quickly unload the cart. More importantly, it concealed the cart from the ship overhead.

It only took a minute with all the extra hands, and the boy and girl were quickly away, leading the horse back into town and hopefully to safety.

Shadai worked with the two teens and her two new companions before sending the youngsters on their way. She kept a good attitude up during the entire process. Once they were gone, however, it flicked off instantly to a cool, calculated business-like demeanor. She motioned for them to enter with a last look around.

"I don't have much in the way of weaponry built onto the shuttle. So a direct fight is out of the question." She spoke as she closed the shuttle bay door, set it to lock, and then turned to make her way toward the cabin. "If you know where your ship is, that's good. If the others are smart, they'll tell the Alliance that the nasty pirates brought in their Captain mortally wounded, and left with the body once he had died on the table. They'll go looking for you outside the town and you'll have half a chance to get to the ship."

She halted and turned to face them in one fluid motion. "Your group and I both need off this planet. And frankly, I'm tired of short hops to various worlds spending my money on refueling and rebuilding whenever those hundans get too damned close to me." Her brief irritation faded as soon as it arrived. "I'm willing to cruise with you until your Captain decides I need to leave. But for now, I'm hiding you both here until the Alliance passes by."

She slipped into the pilot's chair to check on some of her systems, namely the ones that could get her information on the number of ships in the area, where they were, how much time it would be until they arrived at their destinations, and everything else she could get. "Unless they force my hand," she admitted. "And then I'll take them all out." The problem was, she sounded dead serious about it, if perhaps a little humored.

Her systems picked up two ASREVs, one circling over town, and the other quite far away moving at a similar speed - perhaps at another local settlement.

There were three hover-tanks on her radar as well, all parked in the center of town.

Her systems were too weak to see much farther than that, but she was able to link into the dock systems and get a view of a wider area - some local traffic too far away to be relevant, and at the top of the atmosphere was one very large blip... the signature stated I.A.V. Cortez - a Tohoku-class cruiser. Around it swarmed more ASREVs, patrolling and intercepting ships leaving the planet.

Shadai frowned a little. "Cortez," she said over her shoulder quietly. "You have any dealings with that ship?" She paused. "Well, outside of whatever it was that made your folks use explosives on some of theirs," she amended with a chuckle. "That's who's up there waiting on us."

She sat back and closed her eyes for a moment to think. She knew the major ships. She had to. She let her brain do the rifling to pick out the information she'd need to assess the threat level above while hopefully Naraea and/or her companion spoke up a little.
