As Ja'niri entered the science lab, the bridge contacted her on her communicator.

=^= "Commander Ja'niri, channel open. Transferring to your closest station." =^=

A terminal nearby lit up, indicating she could use it to transmit her message.

Meanwhile, the two junior officers had begun work on the data recorder.

Science Lab 1 - USS Repulse Janiri23sm

Ja'niri received the word back from the bridge and walked to master terminal in her office. Office might be too grand of a word, but it had a door, a desk and a secure monitor feeding directly into Repulse's computer core. She brought up the transmission protocols forwarded by the communications officer.

=/\=Identify: Jaylas sh'Aniri Therach, Commander, Authorization Epsilon 923-234 Delta 45-Tango-84. Open secure channel priority one Starfleet Command. Repulse has reached the remains of Spacestation Regula One. The station has been destroyed with no apparent survivors. We have recovered the data beacon and hope it can shed further light on the situation. Sensors show distinctive energy signatures of Klingon Disruptor weapons in debris of Regula One. Repulse sending away team to investigate subterranean caverns on Regula planetoid. We will update as soon as possible. Please provide directives on Klingon situation. Repulse out.=/\=

Ja'niri shut down the com channel. It would take some time to receive a response from Starfleet, and there was little help for them in this remote sector of Federation Space.

She turned her attention to the officers working on the data recorder. These devices were designed for just this purpose. Connecting one to the computer in the science lab was not very difficult. Recovering the data and repairing whatever damage the beacon had sustained could be a little more challenging. So far the junior officers had managed to attach the uplink cables. The terminal next to them ran with static.

Ja'niri pulled out her tricorder and walked to the terminal. "What is the situation Ensign?" The young man answered, "It would seem damage to the beacon is interfering with the playback." Ja'niri gave the man an icy stare for stating such an obvious condition. "Oh really thank you for pointing that out. Perhaps you could also tell me the color of the beacon. Or perhaps why I keep you employed on this vessel." She stated with dripping malice and sarcasm. "I want a full logrithmic analysis of the recorder pattern and see how it deviates from a standard recording." She typed on her tricorder as she spoke. "Never mind, I've already done that. Adjust the gain on a frequency of 073 microcycles. " She ran the test signal on her tricorder and identified the recuring noise in the recording. She typed a command into her tricorder and hit send to the main computer bank. "If you are able run the patch program I just uploaded to the computer on a filter for the recording." The two men bumbled over each other fulfilling her wishes. Her antenae arched forward towards the two men, looking as if they were angry snakes looking for their supper. In a matter of minutes they had accomplished the task. She stood back and look at the screen. They looked at her for some level of approval. They got none. "Well, play it." she stated.

The screen flickered before showing.....

... mostly empty space. Every few seconds one of the arms of the weapons platform would appear crossing the bottom of the screen as they rotated around the platform, but there was no other activity. One of the junior officers made an adjustment to play back the final 30 seconds of the feed.

The empty space continued for nearly 10 seconds, until flashes began lighting up the screen. Each flash came approximately every few seconds, and the arms continued their rotation. Ten seconds passed with the flashing continuing, then a much brighter, different colored flash filled the entire screen. The feed suddenly became grainier, and one of the arms missed its rotation, and then the arms stopped rotating altogether. Another ten seconds and a few more of the brighter flashes, and suddenly the camera was spinning crazily. As the feed got progressively worse, it focused on quick glimpses of bits of metal, a floating weapon arm, Regula One, the intact space station, and - briefly at the end - some type of vessel. The camera went completely black then, continuing for another few seconds before ending.

The junior officer isolated the exact frame that showed the vessel.

The feed was very garbled and had some motion blur, but he began running some cleaning algorithms on it - much more effective for an isolated single frame than for the entire feed. In moments they had a much clearer picture of the vessel.

"What kind of ship is that, Commander?" he asked, bewildered.

Ja'niri's antenae bent towards the screen as she actually shook her head in astonishment. The manta shaped hull was apparent even in the static filled playback. What was that doing here....now?

"It is a Cardassian Galor class destroyer."

The crewmen gave her a blank stare. "A who?"

Her eyes focused sharper on the screen. What was it doing here... with Klingon weapons? They should not be in conflict with the Federation for another 30 years. And this particular ship wasn't even designed yet.

She was going to hold for 30 seconds, then take an appropriate tactical decision?

Ja'niri's antenae straightened up at the Captain's tone. Had she been addressing a junior officer, Ja'niri would have utilized a withering barrage of wit and sarcasm. However, this was her Captain. She scowled and bit down on her lower lip for a moment before responding, =/\=Yes Captain, the matter is important and does require your attention. I will join you immediately.=/\=

She was not trying to be passive aggressive in making the Captain wait for the report, ok maybe a little, but she was under direct orders from Starfleet Intelligence not to share information about the future by means that could be overheard by the general crew. This had to be done in person.

She shot a stern look at the two science officers working with the recording. "That recording will be cleaned up and reconstructed as rapidly as possible. I want a precise, detailed timeline of the attack and destruction of the station. Notify me the moment it is completed. And speak to no one outside the command staff about what you see." She pointed at the beacon to emphasize they should get to work, as she turned and exited the lab to head for the Transporter room.

The officer that had already cleaned the image - Lt. Greyson - looked at his companion. "I don't know what else she wants us to do with this. Most of the data is gone."

Ensign Malech replied, "Maybe she means us to just make stuff up to stick in there. Remind me again why I chose to take this assignment?"

"For the pay, of course."

"And the ladies, don't forget the ladies."

"Blue skin and all... And because you didn't have a choice. Orders are orders. Let's get to work."

"Yes sir, Lieutenant, sir!"

"Shut up."
