Ta'ask didn't have to be ordered twice. As the word left the Captain's lips, scarlet beams ripped out into the eternal night, followed by a trio of photon torpedoes.

Ja'niri was starting to bring up the missing Vulcan scientist when the Captain issued her attack order. Her antennae curled back in alarm and she bit down on her lower lip as a litany of Andorian curses flashed through her mind. Her eyes stayed focused on the readouts on the Cardassian ship. She hoped she could find a Vulcan signal and beam them out before the ship was blown to atoms.

Things happened very quickly then.

The fleeing ships shields flickered away with the phaser fire, leaving it vulnerable to the incoming torpedos. Its own phasers fired - but not at Repulse, instead targeting the torpedos themselves. Only one was hit, the other two remained on their collision course.

The torpedo impacts were imminent, when suddenly phaser fire came from off the port side of the Repulse, destroying both before they impacted the enemy ship.

"What the hell?" Carter shouted, before turning to his console. "Another ship is decloaking off the port side! A Klingon Bird of Prey!"

With the shields down, Ja'niri's scans were unobstructed. There were dozens of lifeforms on board the Cardassian ship - and not a single one was Klingon. The computer didn't recognize the patterns, but she did. All but one was Cardassian. The last seemed Vulcan, but her trained eye and modified sensors saw through the simple ruse. The Vulcan was not Vulcan at all, but a disguised Romulan.

Her scans also showed the device on board, but only momentarily.

Carter noticed it as well, "The Bird of Prey is activating its transporter, it's beaming the device off of the alien ship!"

On screen, the Romulan was shouting, "So it is war you have chosen?! Stand down and prepare to surrender your vessel, humans!"

Ensign Roux had not yet turned the ship to flee, considering the new situation. "Romulan warbirds in firing range in thirty seconds, Captain."

Ja'niri locked the transporter on the Romulan spy. If they were going to get some information about what was going on here, an old fashioned interrogation would be useful. Not to mention a captive if they needed to negotiate. She signaled the transporter room to beam the Romulan over. =/\=Security to Transporter Room One. Hold the Vulcan until we are secure.=/\=

"Captain I am beaming over the missing scientists. My scans show him to be a Romulan Spy. He may be of use to us." She stated cooly to the Captain.

Ta'ask's jaws snapped shut in anger as he watched the signals from his tropedoes fade off the screen. He pondered, 'Do we shoot at Klingons still?' Since the truce at Khitomer they were allegedly the Federation's allies. But what was this now. The Klingons had interfered with their attack and had just taken posession of an experimental device. They would have to drop their shields before going back into cloak. He opened up a separate targeting solution on the Klingon vessel should he need to fire on them. Meanwhile, the Romulans were coming and he had a vessel to destroy. He launched another burst of phaser fire into the Cardassian ship. In moments the torpedoe crews would have another volley ready to fly he waited for the indicator to turn green.

Thirty seconds until the Romulans arrived, Heinz thought as she watched the Romulan shouting. Then she hung up on him. Seriously, some people had no charm.

"Once the Romulan spy is on board, try to steal the transporter! Mr Ta'ask, fire on the Bird of Prey! Ensign Roux, disengage on my command!" she ordered.

This was a key situation; everything hinged on the next thirty seconds. If the Romulans got into range, she would have to flee.

=^= "Transporter Room 1 to Bridge, I've completed the transport. Security is escorting the Vulcan to the brig." =^=

The Cardassian ship's lights went out as the phaser fire hit the ship, their engines flickered and died, and it began to drift.

Carter reported, "Alien vessel has been disabled, I'm reading only life support is operational. They have lost engines, intertial dampers, and gravity." A pause as more information appeared. "The Klingon vessel is re-cloaking."

Ensign Roux responded to the Captain's order with a grim determination. She knew that all of their lives could depend on her quick reaction and abilities. She couldn't help but be a little thrilled with the situation. "Standing by, Captain."

Nor did Ta'ask. He locked in the loosed track he had been maintaining on the Klingon vessel and immediately directed all fire at it including the new volley of torpedoes that just were loaded. "Ordinance isss away Captain!" There were moments left before the Bird of Prey's shields went up, he was determined to use them.

Ja'niri's antenae slumped even more. One thing she could not get used to in this century was the flagrant disregard for galactic law and treaties. She enjoyed the thrill of combat as much as any crew member, well actually more than most of the humans, but in the last minute they had violated the neutral zone and now were firing on new allies. In her time these were grave offenses that would cost a Captain her ship. But she reminded herself that these were not her times. Communications with Starfleet Command still could take several hours from their current position in space. This gave the Captains a bit of autonomy for their actions. This however was likely to cause long term difficulties. Still she was the XO and her duties were to her crew as well as the Federation. But protocol did dictate that she must inform the Captain.

"Captain, by firing we are in violation of the Khitomer Accords, as well as the Neutral Zone." she announced in a soft cool voice.

"No", Heinz replied, "We're engaging in hot pursuit of a mutual enemy of the Federation and the Klingon Empire. Get with the programme please".

The maneuverable Klingon ship had already begun turning about, pointed back into Federation space.

The phaser fire scorched along the hull, cutting into it but not crippling the vessel, spilling atmosphere, debris, and bodies into space from its interior. The torpedoes were nearly there when the vessel went to Warp at the same time as it cloaked - it must have already had its trajectory programmed in for it to go to warp so quickly. The torpedoes sailed past the now vacant space where the Bird of Prey had been.

"Romulan vessels coming into firing range!"

The ship rocked as the first volley of phaser fire hit the Repulse shields.

Ja'niri braced herself as the ship shuddered from the impact of the Romulan disruptors. She looked to the ship's system board.

"Captain, shields are at 15%! We can't take many more hits like that." The frenzy of combat was beginning to melt her calm Andorian demeanor.

Ta'ask locked on to the lead Romulan ship. "Sssir, phasssersss ready to fire." His claw stood ready to release photon death back towards their adversaries.

"Don't fire!" Heinz yelled, "Go after the Bird of Prey! Take us into warp now!"

She noted that she hadn't fired a single shot at the Romulans. That would stand her in good stead in the event that this ended up in a court-martial.

Ensign Roux was ready for the command, and she put the inertial dampers to their limits as she turned the ship about and went to warp, leaving the neutral zone behind. All on the bridge could feel the strain to stay in their seats, and a few actually had to hold on to their consoles as they were taken by surprise at the sudden thrust.

"We are back in Federation space, Captain, at Warp 1" Roux reported. "Currently heading back towards Regula. Would you like a different course laid in?"

Ja'niri made quick adjustments to the scanning arrays. A cloaked vessel in the 24th century was problematic. Back in this time it was a
nightmare. Fortunately, they knew a ship was out there, and that made detection more possible. Secondly, she was familiar with several methods to detect cloaked vessels that, while they might not exist just yet, were not outside of what could be possible. A Klingon vessel jumping to warp and remaining cloaked would create a tremendous energy signature. This would create an energy wake that might appear as a sensor echo due to the subspace displacement. It someone was looking for those traces, she probably would find them. The scanners received her undivided quadroscopic attention.

It took a bit of study but she found what she was looking for. She keyed in a logarithmic formula that then began to plot these subspace anomalies, until a distinct path could be formulated. And there it was, a trail of invisible breadcrumbs leading them to their cloaked prey. She grinned slightly for thinking a moment the way Lt. Ta'ask probably did.

"Captain. I believe we have them."

Ensign Roux looked puzzled at her comrade sitting at the navigational console.

Eat them? she mouthed, wondering what that meant. She didn't have much longer to contemplate that as she was receiving coordinates from Ja'niri.

"Setting new course, maximum warp, ma'am!"

She quickly did a calculation, then added. "We are gaining on them. We should be within firing range in 20 minutes, assuming they maintain current course and speed."

Admiral Carter stood then, and stated, "Excuse me, Captain." before he moved towards the lift at the back of the bridge.

The order to 'eat them' caught Ta'ask's attention. It took him a moment to figure out if the female mammal was serious or not. Klingons were not as tasty as regular human mammals, but their blood added a unique spice to a meal. Ta'ask gathered that the Captain had been using a mammalian form of speech. He sniffed he air. Yes, she was not serious. But now he was sorting through the scents of the various bridge officers and contemplating how they might taste. He fought to get his mind back on his job at tactical.
