Ronon flew through the hatch, his big hands ripped open a few panels to access the emergency start sub routine, this was a protected EEPROM circuit that contained a back up program to run the engines, since they had very little in the batteries Ronon finds the compressed air start up system, it was a good standby for these times
Ronon and X begin forming a plan to restart one engine, then slave the other engine off of it, dump the back up program into the main computer and let the adaptive memory re learn the engines

Ronon calls Olaf

=" Olaf we're gonna crank er over, hope for the best "=

Ronon slaved over the dead engines, working with X they got things in a crude configuration, Ronon was talking with X as they worked

" Strange they never took me, Alliance wants me, plus I am a runner, uhh gorram it !! "

Ronon licks the new wound then looks at X

" She drew blood from me,.. Ok lets give er a try "

The electric start failed on both engines, the only thing they had was the back up compressed air start on engine number 1

" OK X we got enough compressed air for one crank and our batteries are dying "

The lights started going dim as X cranked the engine using the compressed air , if this failed they were drifting

Olaf's reply was quick in coming:
=" Copy, engine room. Give her a kick. "=

For what seemed the first time today, something actually went right. The engine roared to life, but without the software to help regulate it, the normal purr of the engine was a painful sickly groan. The engine was obviously not running at peak efficiency.

The lights came back a bit, but the solar sails would help considerably, assuming nothing between them and the engine was also shorted.

Ronon watched as the two engines loped along like sick cows, one could hear the back firing up the intake, Ronon enriches the mixture a bit, then advances the timing and gets a bit more out of the engines, he had to be careful with the exposed valve-train parts , especially those dreads
They could really use the engine management software right now, but all they had were the rudimentary PROMs to get the engines firing, or in this case misfiring , Ronon grunts into his comm unit

" OK Olaf we got us enough to deploy the sails, but were pouring the fuel through the engines like water "

Ronon looks over at X and shakes his head as a knocking sound fills the room, they had just exposed a bad rod bearing

" Gorram it X retard the timing ! "

Soon the knocking subsided, Ronon listened along the engine while X did his thing, he marks where he heard the noise

" I promise you old girl that X and I will give you some TLC, just hold together till we get our captain and Ayla back "

Ronon pats the block

Olaf's reply came a few seconds later.

= "Copy, Ronon. We'll put her through her paces. Keep her together down there." =

A few seconds later, the engines were engaged, causing a groan from them as they came under strain, but they held together. Even if something were wrong, they'd have a hard time detecting it with most of their instruments fried.

The Odyssey was once again moving through the Black.

Ronon and X nursed the engines along , the sound of the hydraulics kicking in slowed the engines so it was work the throttles and manually adjust the fuel and timing , Whoever was flying this thing was going easy on it but also trying to get the most out of the jury rigged set up
Ronon observed the linkages for some of the sails moving, this told him that the big solar sails were being deployed, they had no instruments to tell them due to the EMP damage , they would have to manually switch over from engines to sails and then hope the regulator would work, then they would have time to cobble together some sort of engine management computer
Ronon had noticed some spare parts in a crate while they were looking for that door frame

" OK X get ready to make the switch to the sails and hope that the regulator is working "

Olaf's voice came over the comm once again.

^= "Engine room, can you give me any more output out of the engines?" =^

The frustration was showing on Ronon's face as he glared at the comm panel and punched the talk button

=" Only if I get out and push !! , Hang on I got an idea "=

Ronon looks at X, then at the timing control which was frozen at the base timing, Ronon unplugs the SPOUT connector, then the engines almost die, but both men were quick to advance the timing manually to bring up the RPMs and produce more power and get a soft knock , then they manually increase the pulse width on the injectors to give the engines more fuel, this all had to be coordinated with the throttle opening which was under Naraea's control
This was more advanced tweaking than the original plan that got the engines running, Now Ronon and X had their hands full with two roaring engines. Ronon ran one while X ran the other and both had to watch how much throttle Naraea was giving from the bridge, it was a dance to keep the Odyssey moving along

After Ronon had talked to Olaf on the bridge he follows X's ideas and soon they had the engines at 80% and sounding good for a full burn on manual override , Ronon sucker punches X in the shoulder

" Heck I could have used ya when they picked my shuttle off, good workin with ya "

Ronon checks his engine to make sure it was keeping pace with X's engine, both men were sweaty but enjoying working together

The men could hear the strain of the engines as they entered atmosphere, then the landing nearly caused a burnout. But with a gentle thud, the pressure on the engines was relieved, and they sputtered along at idle.

Within seconds of landing, a ship wide announcement was heard from Olaf:
= All hands, report to the cargo bay. =

Ronon looked over at X, then to his maddrox on his hip, he pulls it out, spins it and plops it back into it's holster while powering it on , the big engines idled along like two big horses ready to pull

" Better let these girls idle, lets go slim "

Ronon was out the hatch and making his way toward the cargo bay
