May 2519, Hera

As the special operations vessel Kvant lined up for deorbit and eventual landing, the crew were looking forward to 72 hours of leave on the planet.

Once they had landed, they would be free to relax, socialise and maybe get royally drunk if they wished. Right now, though, they had to wait for clearance to re-enter: there was a lot of traffic coming through this evening.

A flick through the local sports channels would clearly give the reason: in 48 hours time, Michael "The Maniac" Mitchell would challenge Raul "Rapier" Rook for the Grand Gin Heavyweight title, the most prized boxing belt on the planet and third in the entire 'Verse. 80,000 people were due to attend the main event in the Louise Carter Stadium, with millions watching via pay-per-view.

This included Kvant's crew, who had been given a dozen free tickets by a grateful client. In a VIP box.

Quinn had just walked onto the bridge and saluted the CO when he did. "Still waiting on clearance to land, sir?"

Danielle turned in her captain's chair on the confined bridge and smiled.

"Yep", she said, "Still waiting. We're thirty in the queue".

Quinn shook his head. "Thirty?" He sighed briefly. "So what's the plan, float in orbit and play a few hands of cards until they call us," he said, half sarcastic. "Sounds like we're set to touch down in a really popular area," he said returning to the heart of the matter, "what's the occasion?"

"Boxing", Lakehurst replied, "There's a big title fight and a couple of hundred thousand people are in town for it. Including us. You remember that guy we rescued from those pirates last year?"

"Don't tell me he's in the ring?" If Quinn was thinking of the right guy, after the rescue op the man didn't look like he could stand up to a toddler, let alone a trained boxer. Quinn had been itching for his vacation days, but now and even with the promise of a little R&R within arm's reach, he couldn't wipe the image of a man battered and beaten by abusive and careless pirates from his mind. Despite the year that had since passed and allowed for a full recovery, Quinn felt reluctant to see that man in a boxing ring though he knew he would have recovered by now.

Danielle chuckled at this.

"Oh, no", she said, "Not at all. Turns out he bought a VIP box for the event and gave it over for us to use. Twelve seats, complimentary drinks, plus a three-course diner and two hundred credits of bets each. Sarah and Dave have both declared they're not interested, so the rest of us can each bring a plus one".

Anticipating the reaction.

"Before you ask, the boss is fine with it. In fact, she's going herself with her husband. They've got ringside seats. It's one of those occasions she really needs to show her face at. Heard Kurt Wallenstein will be there as well - though I wonder if he'll stay awake".

There was a ping on the computer.

"Ah... twenty-nine".

Quinn listened, but his thoughts turned to preparations for landing. "Is there anything you need me to do to prepare the ship for touchdown?" Quinn's mind was focused - he wasn't prepared for vacation until he was off the ship.

"Yes", Danielle said, "Remind the crew of the policies while on scheduled leave. Particularly Directive 492".

"492..." Quinn repeated with uncertainty in his voice, not recalling the words that memory recall should have attached to the number.

Danielle made a quick look at her regulations book.

"Sorry", she said, "Firearms requisition's not relevant. I meant 493: Employees are not allowed to embarrass the company. If you want to humiliate yourself, don't identify yourself as an Eagle"

Quinn nodded and released his salute. "I will talk to the rest of the crew then," he said, turning on his heels and exiting the bridge.

Waterloo Docks

Waterloo Docks was one of the 'posher' docks. A place that didn't have people filling your landing area immediately the dust cleared and trying to sell you various knock-off and/or designer gear. That sort of stuff was kept firmly to the marketplace, thank you very much.

As Kvant touched down on pad 181 and the engines came to a halt, the crew unstrapped and started heading for "Land Secure" positions, with two of the Eagles being placed on guard duty.

Lakehurst hit the intercom.

"All crew, all crew" she said, "Unless you're needed for guard duty, once the ship is secured in place, you'll be on leave".

Quinn's face remained unchanging and plain as he turned his head when the announcement sounded. Quinn always found landings and take-offs to be very exciting, although he never let on how much he enjoyed it. In this way, he often remained silent at times such as these, but on this most festive of days for the crew, he managed the word "finally."

"Thank goodness!" Harper said, standing and stretching. The wait for their landing been almost unbearbale, especially given that she was more than ready for a little down time. Even it did come by way of a boxing match. Harper could handle watching half-dressed men hitting each other as long as there was a cold drink to put in her hand.

Fifteen minutes later, the ship was fully secure and the crew were free to do largely what they wanted for 72 hours. Of course, they'd need to change out of their uniforms first.

As Danielle prepared to do so, she walked over to Quinn and smiled.

"What's your plans, Lieutenant?" she asked.

"Going to look up an old mate of mine", Lakehurst said, "Served with her back in the war. Then we're going to hit the town and raise our blood alcohol levels considerably".

At that point, a loud alarm could be heard coming from another hangar.

Quinn's eyes got a bit wider at the alarm. Apart from his eyes, nothing else about him betrayed his desire to kick his feet up and relax for a bit. That included his voice, which lacked of urgency as he spoke with a sound of simple curiosity, "Wonder what that could be?"

Inwardly, Haper groaned. Outwardly she closed her eyes and let out a frustrated sigh. "What now?" She asked to no one is particular, and then reopened her eyes to look around.

Lakehurst knew instantly and reached for the pistol that was still in its holster.

"It's a security alarm! All guards, follow me!"

She ran off the pad in the direction of the alarm sound - coming from three pads over. As they arrived, they could clearly see what the situation was.

A Firefly was sitting on the pad, its ramp down. Standing on the ramp was a large, heavily built man and a short red-haired young woman. The former was holding a knife to the throat of the latter and looked extremely annoyed. In fact he was swearing in Chinese at the other three present, two men and a woman, who had pistols drawn.

Quinn followed immediately, also drawing his pistol.

As the came in sight of the scene, Quinn raised his pistol to the ready-low position, trying to avoid escalating an already bad situation. He also wasn't sure what the source of the trouble was. Back in the day, he was either well aware of the situation before walking into it or he got briefed before going in, but this was an entirely unknown situation with an unknown antagonist.

A monotone pedagogical voice from years past sounded in Quinn's head...

Person A holding Person B at knifepoint is opposite Persons C, D, and E who have guns. Person A might be defending themselves from Persons C, D, and E using their friend Person B as a human shield, or alternatively Persons C, D, and E are responding to a threat against the life of Person B by producing weapons...or both scenarios are occurring at once.

...it wasn't a memory, it was what some of the less adept instructors would have said back at the police academy. An emotionless and distant interpretation of a situation - which entirely fit the situation before Quinn, because he had 0 information except what he could see...the cursing didn't account for much, yet...
