The big engine went from an idle to acceleration mode and was now giving the ship a big push, the engine was smooth as silk, both engineers were glad for that as all the readouts showed the engine as happy, Now it was check these other deficiencies such as the door Mark broke, darn muscle head

Ryan was already working on the damage report in the engine room, when the huge apparatus accelerated. Looks like we're underway once more, he thought. Coming up with the damage report wasn't a difficult task, since the ship's computer registered every malfunction neatly into a log file. The trick however was to see if there was a pattern involved, because that could indicate that there was a faulty system at the core of it all, which for some reason hadn't registered as broken. Or - if sabotage was the cause for all that was going wrong - it could indicate from where systems had been sabotaged.

So far, Ryan couldn't figure out a pattern yet, but he kept going over the logs, inspecting them carefully.

underway. I'm going to push her throttles up for a bit, hope you got
everything tied down.=

Ryan looked up from his inspection, startled somewhat by Poppy's message, but he quickly recovered. He had a way of getting caught up in his work, not noticing the things going on around him.

= "This is the engine room. Roger that, bridge. Go ahead and step on it; everything's shiny over here. Ryan out." =

The chief engineer continued his inspections, noticing the increase in the engine's humming as Poppy increased speed.

Nothing like the sound of an engine gulping air through the intake manifolds and the pulsing of her injectors to feed her fuel, the 6.8 was a thing of beauty , then Ryan noticed a familiar signature on several work orders regarding the defective areas and inspections of the hatch mechanisin , an M Woosley had signed off on these areas and then there was another one named Shepherd , there was a pattern, these two names followed the defective parts and systems and both their names came up on the fuel system and the main fuel pump.

Brandon entered the engine room as Ryan was discovering the pattern to the logs.

"Hey Chief, things sound like they're running smooth. Anything I can help with?"

He was almost hoping they could finally have some down time, but he wasn't about to shirk his duties.

The ship wide announcement system kicked on. Poppy's perky voice
rang through the corridors of the ship not unlike a cruise director of a
lavish Silver Star Spaceliner.

=Ladies and Gentlemen, this is your Pilot. We have a confirmed arrival
at Persephone in two hours and ten minutes. Local time will be 1:35 in
the afternoon. Eavesdown Docks is reporting partially cloud skies with a
35% chance of rain in the evening hours. The annual tulip festival is
currently underway as well as a fascinating convention on Rim World body
modification. Our Captain requests your company for dinner in one hour.
We hope you enjoy the remainder of your flight. Welcome to Persephone.=

Ryan listened to Poppy's message and smiled. She always seemed to be cheerful. When the comm system was quiet again, he answered his fellow engineer. "I've got the damage report covered, Brandon. If you could just quickly see if everything's in order for our landing then you can take some time off. God knows we could all use some. I'll see you at dinner then."

"Aye, chief." Brandon quickly went through the checklist for landing. All systems read functioning normally, everything was secured. After a few minutes, he was done, and entered the all ready into the computer.

"Let's just hope our welding job holds," he remarked, reminding Ryan of the hole they had torn in the hull to repair the fuel leak. "I'm going to grab a quick shower before dinner. See you there, Chief."

Brandon ran his hands through his mess of hair as he left the Engine Room. After all they had been through today, a good hot shower sounded like heaven.

"See you there", Ryan replied as he watched Brandon leave the engine room. Then he returned to his task of checking all the separate malfunctions to see if any pattern could be identified (OOC: some input, GM?).

I already gave ya a hint in an earlier post, two signatures that seem to follow the trail of defective parts

Insert :

then Ryan noticed a familiar signature on several work orders regarding the defective areas and inspections of the hatch mechanisin , an M Woosley had signed off on these areas and then there was another one named Shepherd , there was a pattern, these two names followed the defective parts and systems and both their names came up on the fuel system and the main fuel pump.

End insert

Better have Ryan check the main fuel pump, it is the original but I may put a present there for Ryan

OOC: Sorry James. For some reason I'd totally missed that. Thanks for repeating!

IC: The two names didn't jump out at Ryan at once; in itself there was nothing wrong with either the signatures or the parts in themselves (except that the latter category had turned out to be faulty rather often, of course). But as he progressed in making up a schedule, where among other things he put the parts, the manufacturer, the dates of manufacture, and the mechanics who had installed them and signed off on them in a table, he saw the recurring pattern. "Now there is something that can't be a coincidence." He marked the names and would tell Mark... The captain of his findings at dinner. Right now he needed to check the other parts that these men had signed off on to see whether those were on the verge of breaking down as well. There was no way he could check the whole fuel system out in the black, but the main fuel pump was an obvious candidate: it was an essential system which was now on the suspect list. And more importantly: it was a system that Ryan could check without the need to land the ship.

Ryan walked over to the console. Now that he knew what he was looking for, he could fairly easily work around the obvious cover-ups that a saboteur would have used to hide a faulty system. Instead of calling up the standard diagnostic program, Ryan typed in the command codes directly from the console. It would take a bit longer, but it would give him the information he needed.

When Ryan entered the diagnostic code for the fuel pump performance monitor, the graphic interface loaded showing fuel pressure and flow rates, it was like a heart beat as the engine needed more fuel the flow rate would go up and the pressure, well the pressure should remain constant but it was changing up and down a bit, could be the pressure regulator which was on the fuel manifold downstream from the fuel pump , Right now the big engine was cruising and not demanding much fuel, the flow rate was low, this would change once they reached Persephone and began their powered descent
So far everything was within tolerances just that slight fluctuation in pressure

Normally Ryan wouldn't have bothered checking up on the minor fluctuations, but given the recent history of the Atlantis in regard to system malfunctions he was less tolerant this time. He pulled out the latest data of engine usage to see if the fluctuation in the main fuel pump was due to the same fluctiation being present in the engine fuel usage, or whether he should look for the cause elsewhere.

What Ryan found made him scratch his head, the engine performance was fine, first rate, but where the problem or fluctuation was was when the engine wanted more fuel, the pressure would drop for a second them slowly rise to within normal values, ether the pressure regulator was sticking or the fuel pump was not meeting the demand for those short hard burns
It was time to physically look at the pump which was near the duel fuel tank intake rail, a shrader valve was located near the regulator so Ryan could hook up a pressure gauge to manually check the fuel flow , this could all be done in flight in the black

And this was exactly what Ryan did. As a trained mechanic who knew his way around the Atlantis engine, it took the chief engineer no more than a couple of minutes to hook up a pressure gauge. Almost immediately the device started feeding him numbers which he checked against the numbers that the engine computer was giving him. He felt like he was closing in on the issue and it would be nice if he could tell Mark... the captain at dinner that he had pinpointed the problem.

Ryan's attention was drawn to the diagnostic feed back board, the On board Vehicle diagnostics system was detecting a fuel flow problem , they had good fuel pressure but the volume was not what the engine needed, it was too little, normally it would indicate a plugged fuel filter but Ryan's gut was telling him something else, Brad would have changed the fuel pump if the old one could not feed the bigger engine, for now there would be no flight problems, but if the temperature in the engine compartment rose too much more they would experience engine stumble

There was not much Ryan could do about it at this moment without shutting down the engine entirely and opening her up. So he set the ship's diagnostic system up to send him an alert if the temperature would rise too far. To be on the safe side, he set the alarm to go off well before the temperature would go so high that it would actually cause damage. He would tell Poppy to take it easy on the landing later, just to be on the safe side.

Now that he was confident that his cortex would inform him if anything would go amiss with the engine, it was time for Ryan to take a quick shower and prepare for dinner. He gave everything a quick final check and then locked the door to the engine room behind him after which he made his way to his room.

OOC: I am taking this from a real life experience last weekend with my friends car, The engine would not start, it showed good fuel pressure that would drop off as soon as the engine died ( This should have told me the story )
We replaced the distributor, had the ignition module tested, I tested the coil, banged my head and almost cut my tattooed arm, and in the end it was the electric fuel pump in the gas tank, there was pressure but not enough volume, what fooled me was the smell of raw gas and a fault code on the distributor pickup, Once the repair shop got at it they cleared the code and it did not comeback and replaced the fuel pump . Maybe there were two problems
Lets hope Ryan does better and does not bump his head working around the engine :>)

It was not long when Ryan got an alarm on the exhaust manifold, the back pressure rose above specifications causing too much EGR flow into the intake manifold, this caused a soft throttle and loss of power , it was part of the emissions control systems , there was a temperature signal on the primary catalytic converter , then the engine seemed to stumble, misfire then carry right on like nothing happened
All the readings went to normal or near normal, but this turned on the check engine light ,It was time to talk to the engine and show her love

OOC: One would start to think so.

IC: Ryan angrily entered the engine room and looked at the huge piece of machinery that had decided to give him nothing but trouble. If looks could kill, Poppy would have had to send out a distress signal, because the engine would have been to pieces.

"Nee Tzao Se Mah? Because I can make that happen, you big pile of junk!" Unsurprisingly, the engine didn't answer. While double-checking the readouts, Ryan kept going at the engine. "I've just had about enough of you. When we get to Persephone, I'm gonna open you up and then we'll see what's been troubling you, and more importantly: me!"

The read-outs only confirmed what his cortex unit had already told him. Ryan tweaked the engine a little bit, which would result in the engine building up a little less pressure. This would mean that Poppy had a little less power to work with, but it should take care of the worst of the hick-ups.

After that, the chief engineer left the engine room, his clothes still blissfully clean. It was time to head to the mess hall and get a drink.

As if to torment Ryan, after he had left she started stumbling then coughed up her intake with a bang, then carried on like nothing happened, Poppy felt it at the flight yoke and the sudden power loss, then the surge as the engine came back , then the distinctive smell of the cats overheating , Then the engine stumbled and stalled out, the smell of raw fuel was present

Then Mark's voice came over his radio portion of the unit

" Ryan prepare for emergency shutdown, we got Brad docking with us "

This meant shutting down the electrical portion of the engine and running on batteries, and the news of Brad docking meant that there was trouble

Ryan uttered several curses he wasn't even aware of that he knew and hastefully made his way back inside the engine room. He ran over to the main console and initiated the emergency shut down, which was accompanied by an alarm to take over the noise the engine had produced only moments ago. Although he had been in here only moments ago, the temperature had risen to a disturbing level.

= "Engine room to bridge. I've shut her down. Now can somebody please tell me what the hell is going on?!" =

Already he was checking all the read-outs, although he wasn't feeling very confident that the ship would suddenly tell him the cause of all these problems, since she had also neglected to do so before. Sweat was beginning to form on his forehead. Also from frustration, but mostly from the heat in the engine room. According to Mark, Brad would arrive soon and the man had some explaining to do.
