Morgan's Quarters - Deck A Empty Morgan's Quarters - Deck A

Morgan navigated her way back to the crew quarters as if in a trance. She entered her old room, the room she'd lived in with Svara, the room she inhabited alone now, the room that she'd be leaving in exchange for the XO's quarters soon.

She sat down on the bed and stared at the wall, her feet restlessly tapping the floor. Her emotions, never easily controlled, felt like they were boiling inside of her. She had so many questions. Why didn't the Captain talk to her first? Why had he made Mark the CO instead of her? Why did everyone else seem so calm? This ship was the first place that had seemed like home to her since she left her father's ship to fight in the war twelve years ago. Change was unavoidable, they'd lost so many crew members and gained new ones all the time, but this was different. The Captain had always been the guiding force that kept their mission on target, that made the crew feel like a family, that made her feel like she was important in the grand scheme of things. What would the ship be like without him?

She stood up and started pacing back and forth. She wanted a drink, and she wanted to shoot something, though not exactly in that order. She wanted to scream, and to fight, to relieve the adrenaline that was coursing through her veins.

Her eyes passed over the bottle of liquor that Brandon had left on her bedside table, what seemed like ages ago. Then she dropped to her knees and reached under the bed for the old footlocker she kept hidden under there. Unlocking it, she retrieved an unopened bottle of gin that she'd bought on some dusty old moon back when she was still working with her brother. Sitting there on the floor, with her door wide open so anyone could see, she took a long pull from the bottle, coughed a little bit, then drank some more.

OOC: I apologize if I get any character details wrong during Morgan's little soliloquy below, without having the bios to reference it can be hard to keep stuff straight Razz

IC:

Once Morgan had drank enough to calm down, but not enough to get drunk, her thoughts were a little clearer. This wasn't some big tragedy, it was just a setback. The Captain...er...Gunther...deserved to retire and take care of his mother. She would do the same, if one of her parents fell ill. Mark may have been demoted from XO in the past because of his tendency to get kidnapped, injured, and otherwise indisposed, but that just meant he needed her to step up and have his back. Besides, with Gunther and Joe leaving, Morgan would be the only soldier on board. They had plenty of fighters, and Jelena seemed like she could hold her own in a firefight, but none of them had been through a war. They would need her leadership.

After that internal pep-talk, Morgan stashed the bottle away, closed the door to her room, and changed out of her jeans and t-shirt into something a little more formal. She found the only outfit she owned that wasn't solid black - a crisp, blue, button-up shirt and a pair of khaki trousers - brushed out her hair, and then took a look in the mirror. Now she looked like the XO of the last Iskellion Raider in the 'verse. She smirked at that thought, then turned and headed back to the Bridge.

Morgan's Quarters - Deck A Empty Re: Morgan's Quarters - Deck A

Post  Nicole Rennolds Mon Jun 27, 2011 9:55 pm

Morgan came back to her quarters and closed the door behind her. She needed to freshen up before meeting with Mark in his quarters, and should probably start packing as well so she could move into the XO's quarters once Joe got off on Persephone (OOC: I'm assuming he'll be on board 'til then, since I don't recall him leaving the ship).

She splashed some water on her face to try to get rid of the redness around her eyes. She brushed her hair, straightened out her clothes, and overall just tried to make it look like she hadn't been on the verge of weeping like a schoolgirl a few minutes ago.

Then she stood back from the mirror and looked around the room. It was fairly empty. She was used to having a roommate, and had kept all of her things contained to a small area. She decided to wait before packing. She wanted to procrastinate as long as possible; this was the room she'd shared with Svara, one of her closest friends, and she wasn't quite ready to give it up yet.

She felt jazzed up, fidgety, like she needed to be working. She decided to go on up to Mark's quarters to see what he needed to talk to her about.

Morgan walked back into her room and sat on the bed, rubbing her eyes wearily. She fell back, lying sideways across her bed, and threw one arm over her eyes to block out the light. "I'll just rest my eyes for a minute," she told herself as she dozed off.

Brandon left his quarters and was happy to see Morgan's door open. He stood in the doorway and was about to knock quietly on the open door when he noticed Morgan lying on the bed.

He stood for a moment and watched her sleep. The poor woman had been through an emotional roller coaster. While he wanted to talk with her, he thought it probably was better to let her sleep. He started to close the door, but saw a blanket sitting near the end of the bed.

He stepped in as quietly as he could - now he wished he had paid more attention to the basic stealth training they had been given in boot - and carefully picked up the blanket, unfolding it and placing it over Morgan gently.

~Brandon Miles~

OOC: Wasn't sure if that was an invitation to come wake her up or not Nicole, I'll let you decide if this wakes her up, otherwise Brandon will quietly leave and close the door behind him. Wink

OOC: Adorable Razz

IC: Morgan was a light sleeper, after spending her entire adult life either in combat, or awaiting combat. She stirred at Brandon's movement, her eyes opened, and then she shot straight up in surprise.

"Tyen shiao duh! What are you doing?!" She looked down and saw the blanket in his hands, blinked a couple times, then sat back down with an embarrassed smile. "Um. Sorry. I can be a mite jumpy when I'm woken up...thanks for the blanket. Um, what's up?" She was still a little disoriented from being woken up so suddenly, and was pretty mortified that he had caught her sleeping. She could have been drooling, or snoring, or any other of a number of things women pretend they don't do when they're in the presence of men.

Brandon startled and dropped the blanket like it was a dead man's finger. His face went red.

"I ... uh... came by... to see if ... well, to talk or help or... and you were asleep... of course you were asleep, I mean... I thought maybe ... well, here." He reached down and picked the blanket back up and handed it to her awkwardly.

What WAS he doing in here, really? He should have just discreetly closed the door when he had the chance! Now he looked like some kind of weird person who snuck up on people while they slept!

"I... I..." I am not a crazy insane person who sneaks up on people while they sleep! he wanted to say. He felt like running. But he swallowed and found his voice, despite his heart being in his throat.

"I'm sorry I woke you up. I just came by to see if you needed a hand packing or moving anything or wanted to talk or anything or ..." And now he was rambling. He closed his mouth and tried to melt into the floor.

Morgan smiled sleepily. "That's sweet of you, thanks." She didn't know why he seemed more embarrassed than she was, but for some reason that helped put her more at ease. She scooted over on the bed to make room. "Here, have a seat."

She looked around at her room. It was clean, mostly because she didn't have that much stuff. "I suppose I should be packing, but I keep putting it off. There's no rush, anyway, seeing as we don't have enough crew to fill up the empty space. And I like this room. I used to share it with another gunner, Svara. I suppose the XO's quarters will be nice, though. Bigger than this, so I'll need to buy lots of stuff on Persephone to fill it up with," she said with a grin. "Speaking of, got any planetside plans?"

Brandon gratefully sank onto the bed. He was glad to see she wasn't angry at him. He let her talk, giving him time to calm down and collect himself a bit. He couldn't help but to gaze at her though. He didn't care if it felt like he was staring - she was stunning.

"Another gunner? Atlantis is pretty effective with just you at the guns. I can barely imagine how much more deadly it could be with another gunner." He stopped short of asking what had happened to Svara. In his experience, asking about old crew generally brought up bad memories - most didn't leave voluntarily - especially during the war. If Morgan had shared a room with Svara, it was possible the two had been close. And if Svara had been killed, he didn't want to open up old wounds. Of course, if they hadn't been friends, it was better to leave that alone as well. Although, at some point he wanted to know everything about her, so it was bound to come up. He'd let her decide if she wanted to talk more about it, by leaving a little lead...

"These rooms are spacious for one person, but seem a bit cramped to share with someone else. I mean, you could barely fit a double bed in here," he jested. "Was it easy to adjust living with someone else?"

"Speaking of, got any planetside plans?"

"Nothing planned yet." He hoped that meant she wanted to make plans with him. He decided not to leave it to chance. "You want some help shopping?"

OOC: By the way, it's not explicitly mentioned in the Atlantis description, but I assume the "double" rooms are bunk beds, considering the layout graphic shows all the rooms with single beds (and not enough room for another single unless it is a bunk). Is Morgan's room a double room? Does she have a bunk bed in here still? I guess I just imagined all the rooms as single beds. Shocked

Morgan's Quarters - Deck A Empty Re: Morgan's Quarters - Deck A

Post  Nicole Rennolds Tue Jul 12, 2011 9:58 am

OOC: I'm not sure how the rooms were meant to be laid out. Back when Svara was still here (and Catherine Walter was still playing) we sort of roleplayed it as having two single beds, rather than a bunk bed. Maybe they were bunk beds that could be disassembled and turned into two beds? Either way, we can play it as Morgan having removed the extra bed when Svara left the crew, leaving just one single bed.

IC:

Morgan grinned. The surest way to her heart was to compliment her shooting skills. "When I first joined the crew, Svara was the only gunner. Once I had sort of proven myself, she moved out of the FDC and up to the Bridge, where the secondary gun controls are, and acted as a technical officer, and I took over as the Chief Gunner."

She could see Brandon staring at her as she talked, but she did her best to pretend she hadn't noticed. She was treading carefully, which didn't come naturally to her - she was, and always had been, brash and upfront when it came to romantic dealings. But she had never (successfully) been able to negotiate the treacherous ground of crew relationships, and, especially on a crew this small, she knew it could be disastrous if she made a wrong move.

"These rooms are spacious for one person, but seem a bit cramped to share with someone else. I mean, you could barely fit a double bed in here," he jested. "Was it easy to adjust living with someone else?"

Morgan shrugged. "I don't think I've ever had my own room since joining the Army 12 years ago. I guess I just got used to it. I mean, some room mates are better than others, but overall you just learn to lose your modesty and roll with it. Svara and I got along well so it never bothered either of us. She left the crew back on Athens, right before we picked you folks up, so I haven't really adjusted to having this room to myself. Though I guess I won't have to, since I'm movin' soon."

"Nothing planned yet." He hoped that meant she wanted to make plans with him. He decided not to leave it to chance. "You want some help shopping?"

Morgan grinned. "If there's one certainty about me, it's that I never need help spending money. I'd love to have some company though."

"I can understand, my last ship only the Captain had his own room. The rest of us were stuck in a communal bunk area. Not much privacy at all. In fact, I haven't had my own room since I left home before the war."

His face became a little sad when he thought of home. He briefly wondered how his sisters were.

"Well," he said, quickly smiling again, "I can't say I know much about furniture, but I'd be happy to keep you company."

OOC:
I always understood that the rooms were equipped with a bunk system and that the top bunk could be folded up when not in use, But we can go with the more adjustable bunk bed or two singles beds depending on what the room mates wanted , Yes and Atlantis was equipped with good supportive mattresses

"it does seem odd, doesn't it? I understand that the ship just got a complete overhaul, and yet there's been more problems in the last few days then a week on my old ship, and she was an old clunky thing held together with baling wire and bubble gum."

He sighed and leaned back on his elbows, looking up towards the ceiling as he reclined, half-laid on the bed with his feet out straight on the floor. He was finally beginning to relax, the stress of the two major, near-catastrophic events that had happened in the past few hours ebbing away as they talked. "One thing is certain, I don't enjoy spacewalks much. It gives you a certain... perspective when a tether is the only thing keeping you from being flung into the cold heart of the Black."

He looked over at Morgan - or rather up at her as he was now lower than she was. "How about you, ever had to do a spacewalk?" He figured she would have had zero-G training being in the military, but training was nothing like actually being out there in a life or death situation.

~Brandon~

OOC: Hopefully I described the position he is in to enough detail... was having trouble conveying that movement properly. Wink

"The ship never used to act this way," Morgan said with a slight frown. "Maybe she's sensitive to all the turmoil goin' on with her crew."

The frown disappeared when she saw Brandon relax on the bed, and she smiled happily at the thought that he was growing more comfortable in her presence. She scooted over to the end of the bed, and turned around so she was facing him with her back against the wall. She folded her legs underneath her and said, "Sure, I've been on lots of spacewalks. When I was a little kid, my dad bought me a miniature EVA suit and would take me out on top of his ship to look at the stars. I've always loved spacewalks, it's so peaceful out there, surrounded by nothing but the vacuum of space and a hundred million stars." She looked over at Brandon with a crooked, self-conscious smile. "Although I'll admit it's a little less poetic in emergency situations."

Morgan's Quarters - Deck A Empty Re: Morgan's Quarters - Deck A

Post  Jason Andersen Tue Jul 19, 2011 12:36 am

Brandon fell in love with her then. Years down the road, when anyone asked what moment it was, he would say it was this very one. With her legs crossed and sitting on her bed, looking at him with that crooked smile, and telling him about the spacewalks her dad took her on. He knew the moment wouldn't last, so he savored it as long as he dared.

He was thinking about something, that was apparent from his pause. Before the silence could grow awkward, though, Brandon replied.

"I suppose I haven't had a chance to be out there in anything but emergency situations. Your dad was a spacer, then? My dad was a farmer. But he told me not to waste the talent I had fixin' things on the farm. He knew where I wanted to be. I'd spend the warm summer nights on the roof, looking up at the stars and watching the local freighters land and take off in the town miles away." He laid back on the bed then, his arms behind his head, staring glazed eyes at the ceiling as if he were back on the roof of the house he grew up in.

"Mom would have a fit when she caught me up there - but it never stopped me. Sometimes Dad would join me. Sometimes he'd talk, telling me about ... well, man stuff. Other times he'd just sit quietly, listening to the crickets chirp or my sisters giggling in the yard as they caught fireflies. I'd often wonder if perhaps he would have made different choices, given the chance to start again. Maybe he'd have been a spacer too, rather than becoming a farmer."

"But then I wouldn't be here, or my sisters. He'd have never met my mom. And I don't think that would be something he'd ever be willing to give up. He loved my mom too much to ever have wanted to leave her."

He sat up then, and looked at her.

"I wouldn't ever give that up. Not for anything."

Morgan could sense the significance of the moment, and of the story Brandon told her. When he sat up and turned to face her, she felt terrified and thrilled at the same time. There were warning signals going off in her head, telling her that this was too dangerous, that she should tell a joke or get up and run or do something to break the tension and prevent anything from happening. But another part of her knew that she couldn't keep running away from her feelings forever, that life was too short. She knew that no matter what happened, she could always look back at this moment and have no regrets.

With her decision made, Morgan threw caution to the wind, leaned forward, and kissed him.

The kiss caught Brandon by surprise. Almost enough that he fell backward and ended it as soon as it began. He caught himself before that could happen, flexing his back muscles to stop himself from toppling over. His shock disappeared quickly as he returned the kiss, leaning back into her, wrapping his arms around her, running his fingers through her crimson locks.

She smelled incredible. He savored the taste on his lips. Heaven couldn't be this good, he knew it in his heart.

OOC: Morgan is full of surprises Wink

IC:

Morgan felt Brandon fall back at first, and wondered for a moment if she had made a mistake and he was pulling away. He quickly assuaged her fears though when he leaned forward and wrapped his arms around her. With one hand she reached up and entwined her fingers in his curly hair, savoring the feeling of being so close to another human being, relishing the warmth and intimacy of it.

After a moment she placed her small hands on his chest and pushed him gently away. "Someone's coming," she said. She could hear footsteps coming down the corridor (probably Sue and Jelena) and her door was still wide open. As much as she was enjoying the moment, she had a feeling that catching their XO in a compromising position may affect the Fire Duo's ability to respect her as a leader.

She was feeling giddy and nervous, and as usual that meant she needed to run her mouth to break the tension.

"So, we were talking about our parents, right? You asked me about my dad. He was a pilot, and bought a transport ship - well, really, it was a smuggling ship - when he was in his 20s. Had a small crew, just a mechanic, a couple mercenaries, and my mom. My mom was a Companion, before she met my dad, but she fell in love with him and he convinced her to run away with him. It was very romantic. My brother, who's a couple years older than me, was sent to boarding school when he was a little kid, but my dad kept me on the ship and hired tutors and such to keep me educated." She was rambling, talking so fast that her sentences ran together with little pause in between. She was grinning, though, and one of her hands had found its way into his.
